AUDREY HEPBURN: THE PARAMOUNT YEARS
TONY NOURMAND
Audrey Hepburn's legendary style and grace, first seen by the public in her 1953 debut, Roman Holiday, redefined perceived notions of Hollywood glamour and ushered in an age of sophistication and elegance. Her legacy on screen and in fashion is undisputed and her image has become as synonymous with her fame as her films. Audrey Hepburn: The Paramount Years collects for the first time those memorable billboard images which established Hepburn's iconic status. Featuring the golden period of her film career, this sumptuous book includes never-before-seen poster artwork for Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Funny Face and Breakfast At Tiffany's along with magazine covers from the period, lobby cards, Givenchy's stunning original costume sketches and rare behind-the-scenes stills from Audrey Hepburn's Paramount films. With a foreword written by Sir Christopher Frayling, Chair of Arts Council England and Rector of the Royal College of Art, this book shows, film by film, how Hepburn's classic image was created through a combination of exquisitely designed costume, beautiful photography and illustration and an elegance that has stood the test of time.

CARNIVAL IN SUBURBIA
JOHN GREGORY
When he died suddenly in Melbourne in July 1999, at the age of 48, Australian painter Howard Arkley had just achieved his greatest successes, receiving international critical acclaim for his work at the Venice Biennale and in Los Angeles. Arkley enjoyed pop themes and imagery, like many of his 'postmodern' generation, but he also developed an idiosyncratic individual style, using heavy, air-brushed lines and vivid colour to produce stylised representations of everyday subjects. Carnival in Suburbia covers Arkley's work thematically, beginning with his best-known works of suburban imagery. Subsequent chapters examine his fascination with pattern, colour and line; a full account for the first time of his creative use of source material; and his collaborations with Juan Davila and other contemporaries. Finally, Arkley is identified as a 'carnivalesque' painter, intrigued by death, grotesque body imagery and masks. John Gregory, an art-historian by profession, was Arkley's brother-in-law.

EGYPT, THE WORLD OF THE PHARAOHS
MATTHIAS SEIDEL & REGINE SCHULZ
Roman emperors, Arab scholars, and early travelers were already drawn to and enchanted by the fascination of the land along the Nile. The pyramids of Giza, the temple-city of Karnak, or the Valley of the Kings with the grave of Tutankhamen even today maintain their extraordinary force of attraction. Across the centuries the high culture of the ancient Egyptians has retained its allure. This can certainly be attributed to their astounding architectural, artistic, and technological achievements as well as their high level of writing and literature. The unified world view of old Egypt, in which science and religion are an indissoluble unity, impresses us deeply, as well.

THE STENCIL GRAFFITI CAPITAL
CARL NYMAN & JAKE SMALLMAN
An edgy, lavishly visual survey that shows the best work of the best street artists working in Melbourne, Australia. Bansky, the well known British stencil artist, after a visit to Melbourne, in 2003 said: The walls of Melbourne are very noisy...like the noise of a hundred drunk people talking among themselves. He went on to say, It looks like the city belongs to anyone that wants it. It feels like there's more opportunity. Through intimate interviews, dynamic layouts and a riot of examples the street artists are shown in the context of world street art culture. Important questions such as why they paint are closely examined. Melbourne's walls are both canvases and meeting place for ideas, making it the hot-bed for the best in stencil graffiti art.

PHAIDON DESIGN CLASSICS: PTS. 1, 2 & 3
A 'design classic' is an industrially manufactured object with timeless aesthetic value. It serves as a standard of its kind and, despite the year in which it was designed, is still up to date. The collection presented in these three volumes has been put together by a group of experts following the above criteria. The objects are presented chronologically, beginning with an elegant pair of Chinese bonsai scissors from the early 1800s, still in production today, and ending with Jasper Morrison's recent 'brunch set', which is destined to become a 'classic'. Glancing through the volumes, the reader will gain an understanding not only of the history of design, but a history of taste and culture. The book is an extraordinary journey through the objects that have shaped our society, from the first attempts to combine function and beauty in the nineteenth century, through the machine aesthetics of the thirties, the advent of plastic and other new materials in the fifties and sixties, up to the 'classics'-to-be of the last ten years.
The book includes not only classic objects created by great and internationally renowned designers, such as Breuer, Le Corbusier, Dreyfuss, Eames, Yanagi and Castiglioni, to name but a few, but also anonymously designed pieces, such as the clothes peg, the deck chair, the corkscrew and the chopstick, which, in spite of lacking a specific designer, have achieved such perfection in design and functionality that they have eliminated the possibility of improvement. From the paperclip, to the Alvar Aalto Savoy vase, to the Jaguar E Type, all of the objects featured in the book fill our desks, cupboards, kitchens, purses, dreams and pockets. Each product is presented on two, four or six pages and accompanied by a text, written by one of over fifty experts in the field of design. The texts provide a historical context, with key information about the development of the design, and an explanation as to why that particular design is important and groundb
